Lieber Herr Wolf,

zusammen mit den Dorfbewohnern drängt sich die vierjährige Hawa Noor um den gerade aufgefüllten Wassertrog. In der Hand hält sie einen kleinen selbstgebastelten Trichter. Hawa kommt jeden Tag mit ihrem Onkel hierher, um Wasser für ihre Familie zu holen.

Hawa ist eine von hunderttausenden Kindern, die unter der Dürre- und Hungerkatastrophe in Ostafrika leiden. Das kleine Mädchen lebt in Wajir im Norden Kenias – einer der am stärksten von der Dürre betroffenen Regionen am Horn von Afrika. Sämtliche Quellen und Brunnen dort sind versiegt. Das ganze Dorf ist auf die Wasserlieferungen angewiesen.

Sauberes Trinkwasser ist lebenswichtig, vor allem für mangelernährte Kinder. Denn sie sind besonders anfällig für Durchfallerkrankungen und diese werden durch unsauberes Wasser und mangelnde Hygiene ausgelöst. Durchfallerkrankungen trocknen die bereits geschwächten Kinderkörper innerhalb weniger Tage aus und verstärken die Mangelernährung – oftmals bis zum Tod.

UNICEF hilft in Ostafrika: Wir versorgen Familien in Dürregebieten und in Flüchtlingslagern mit sauberem Trinkwasser, Wasseraufbereitungstabletten und Wasserkanistern. Noch während die aktuelle Nothilfe läuft, arbeitet UNICEF bereits daran, die Trinkwasserversorgung der Kinder in Ostafrika langfristig zu sichern. Zum Beispiel mit solarbetriebenen Pumpen, die das Wasser selbst aus großen Tiefen herausbefördern können.
